HOW TO MEASURE FOR YOUR VERTICAL BLINDS

Vertical blinds are generally fitted inside the window recess. The size which we need to make the blinds to the correct size is the overall recess width and drop, unless you want your blind to be an exact width and drop - Show your size as ‘recess’ on the order form - we will make the necessary deductions from this to allow for free movement of the blind. We suggest that you take the width measurement at the very top of the recess - where the headrail of the blind will fit, to allow for any slight variations in the width further down the window. The recess drop should be taken in 3 places (each side and in the centre of the window) and the shortest measurement used. We prefer the measurements in millimetres if possible please.

The only time the full recess width is not used is where more than 1 blind is being fitted to a conservatory or bay window. In these cases a deduction needs to be made from the overall size to allow for correct fitting. The correct way to fit blinds into a corner is as shown below

For a right angled corner, Blind A is measured to fit to the end of the recess. To enable Blind B to be fitted butting up to Blind B as shown 95mm needs to be deducted from the recess size. Order the blinds as recess size.

For angled corners other than 90 degrees, the easiest way is to cut some strips of card to 95mm in length and place them on the window sill as shown, you can then measure where shown. Order the blinds as recess size

If you know the exact size you want your blind please show ‘exact’ on the order form. Your blind will then be made to the exact width and drop you give without deductions

STACKING ARRANGEMENTS AND CONTROLS

Your blind will have a pull cord for moving the louvres backwards and forwards across the window and a chain for tilting the windows through 180 degrees, these must both be located on the same side of the blind. The options for stacking arrangements and control side are as shown below. (Please note control and draw sides are as viewed from the inside of the room

BRACKETS
As standard your blind will be supplied with a top fixing spring bracket for fitting inside a recess. This is fixed by drilling up into the lintel. If you are fitting to a window with out a recess (ie a conservatory) you will need face fix brackets. Please request these on the order form and the correct quantity will be sent with your blind

LOUVRE WIDTH
There are generally 2 different louvre widths 5” (127mm) and 3.5” (89mm). Both louvre widths are available at the same price - we don’t charge extra for 3.5”. From experience we would suggest that the smaller 3.5” louvres are generally much more pleasing on the eye.

CONSERVATORY ROOF SHADING - How to be comfortable in your conservatory even on the hottest days

It’s spring and you’re sitting in your conservatory that doesn’t have blinds. The outside temperature is 20 degrees Centigrade and partly cloudy. With clouds covering the sun the conservatory remains relativeley comfortable, however the moment the sun comes out you will almost immediateley feel hot and uncomfortable.

This in a phenomenon called ‘Instantaneous Heat Gain” where your body heats up far beyond your surroundings. The room temperature certainly hasn’t risen that much but the effects of the sunlight on your body has caused you to feel a lot hotter than the room.

Any conservatory without some sort of shading will be very uncomfortable on sunny summer days, particularly so a south facing one. Added to this, with predominantly light materials used in conservatories there is the additional problem of glare.

The sun emits short wave radiation that changes to long wave as it passes through the window onto objects in the conservatory. The long wave radiation bounces off these obects and, unable to pass back out through the window causes a build up known as the ‘Greenhouse Effect’ which can make rooms, particularly conservatories very hot and uncomfortable.

So how can you take control of your conservatory and use it even on the hottest sunniest day of the summer.? Well from the information above it is pretty obvious that you need to control the amount of sun entering the conservatory, particularly through the roof. Tranluscent roof materials will cut out some of the direct sunlight but but not all of it, even a small percentage of direct sunlight can cause discomfort so the more you can cut out the better.

The only effective way to control the climate in your conservatory is with some type of roof shading. The most efficient is with an external awning which will onviously cut out the sunlight before it enters the conservatory, however you need to take into consideration the cost and also the fact that an awning will affect the appearance of your conservatory and property. The next option is roof blinds, fitted internally to your conservatory. Pleated blinds are ideal for conservatory roof shading as they can be made up into all of the unusual shapes which can be found in conservatory roofs. There are however many types of pleated blind fabric on the market, so care needs to be taken when choosing the fabric for your blind or you can end up with a costly roof blind system which really doesn’t give you the control you need. Some sort of coating on the fabric to reflect the short wave radiation out of the room with little effect on its wave length is a must, this will avoid the build up of heat between the glass and the blind. A fabric which cuts out as much direct sunlight as possible will give you the most control. For example a fabric which cuts out 100% of sunlight will give you 100% control of your environment. With all the blinds closed you will cut our 100% of the sunlight and by opening some or all of the blinds you can let in up to 100% of the sunlight.
Certainly with the correct roof blinds fitted you will be able to take control of your conservatory and and be able to use it on even the hottest, sunniest summers day.
With the roof blinds sorted you can add side blinds in vertical, roller, pleated, or venetian blinds for privacy making your conservatory a valuable extra living space

HOW TO FIT YOUR VERTICAL BLINDS

FITTING THE BRACKETS
TOP FIXING BRACKETS:
Fix brackets in ceiling or lintel with holes drilled on a line at least 3” (75mm from the wall or window frame for blinds with (127mm) louvres or 2 1/8” (55mm) for blinds with 3 ½ (89mm) louvres, End brackets should be at least 2’’ (50mm) from the ends of the track. Any remaining brackets should be spaced evenly between these brackets (see below for the recommended number of brackets for blind widths).

FACE FIXING BRACKETS:
Fix brackets to wall or window frame as closely as possible to the ceiling or lintel with same spacing as recommended for top fixing brackets.

NUMBER OF BRACKETS SUPPLIED ACCORDING TO WIDTH:
Up to 1500mm - 2
Up to 2800mm - 3
Up to 3700mm - 4
Up to 4600mm - 5

FITTTING THE TRACK:
Remove packaging material from track, do not use scissors. Release the cord and chain (cord control moves the louvres backwards & forwards over the window and chain control rotates them.)
Track must be located into brackets keeping controls to side ordered. Locate the small lip projecting from brackets into groove in track. Push track up into brackets. Spring Clip brackets will hold your track without further adjustment. if your brackets have retaining screws (normally with face fix brackets) these should now he screwed into the other slot in the track. Do not over tighten the screws. (This is unnecessary and will damage the track.)

FITTING THE LOUVRES
Turn hooks so that the slats are 90 degrees to the track. (ie hang the louvres in the open position at 45 degrees to the window) Hang louvres keeping all seams one way.

FITTING THE BOTTOM STABILISING CHAIN:
Fix the bottom stabilising chain to each side of’ the louvre weights. Start at one side of the blind and slip the connectors on the chain, over the poles on the weights. Trim ends of the chain as desired, checking first all weights have heen chained. For split draws chain as above then open blind slightly and cut the chain in the middle. Your blind is now ready to operate.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT DRAW THE BLINDS WITH LOUVRES IN CLOSED POSITION.
ALWAYS TURN THEM 90 DEGREES TO THE TRACK BEFORE OPERATING THE CORD
CONTROL.
IF YOU SHOULD EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS WITH FITTING PLEASE CONTACT OUR
HELPLINE (8AM TO 8PM) ON 07801 731919

WHILST QUALITY CHECKS ARE MADE AT EVERY STAGE OF PRODUCTION, OCCASIONALLY FAULTS DO SLIP THROUGH. IF YOU RECIEVE FAULTY ITEMS OR FLAWS IN THE FABRIC, PLEASE CALL THE FACTORY ON (01205) 460004 DURING OFFICE HOURS QUOTING THE ORDER NUMBER AND WE WILL SEND REPLACEMENTS IMMEDIATELY.

COMMON PROBLEMS

PROBLEM – All of the louvres will not turn
REMEDY – This is usually due to the louvres being hung with them in the closed position meaning that they are trying to twist against each other. To rectify take the louvres down and re-hang them in the open position (ie,. at 45 degrees to the window)

PROBLEM – Some of the louvres will not turn whilst some will.
REMEDY – If some of the louvres will not turn there are 2 possible reasons. Either the hook onto which the louvre hangs has been pushed into the traveller block during transit, ensure therefore that the offending hooks are fully pulled out of the traveller body. Holding the hook near the block (not on the end of hook) and pulling with a pair of pliers should do this. If this doesn’t cure the problem, the fault will be that the shaft on the hook will have become dislocated from the gearing. Relocate this by taking hold of the hook near the block with a pair of pliers and whilst turning the louvres with the control chain firmly twist the hook the same way until it locates into the gearing

CARING FOR YOUR VERTICAL BLIND.

Operating; Vertical blinds provide a very effective solution for window dressing, which are easy to operate and control. There are two simple controls so operate your blind, The chain controls the angle of the Louvres and he cord opens and closes the blind, Minimal effort is required, just pull gently on either the chain or cord to achieve he desired position.

Set louvre alignment - Occasionally a louvre will appear to be out of line. To correct this pull the control chain to close the louvres. then pull the chain again until all the louvres sit in line, you will experience some resistance until the misaligned louvre is back in line.

Silicone spray. On manufacture your blind will have been treated with silicone spray, and an occasional spray from a silicone based furniture polish inside the headrail will ensure the louvres continue to glide smoothly. (DO NOT USE OIL AS THIS WILL INVALIDATE THE GUARANTEE)

Washing instructions - Please ensure that your fabric is machine washable prior to washing, if in doubt please contact the factory giving the name of the fabric.
Preparation - Before removing the louvres from the headrail unclip the chain at the bottom of the louvres and slide out the weights, to remove from the headrail simply tilt the louvres slightly and remove from the hook. Lay the louvres directly on top of each other on a flat surface. The top hem of each louvre should be placed just below the top hem of the louvre underneath. Starting at the top, tightly roll up the louvres making sure that there are no creases and that the edges of the louvres stay in line. IF the finished roil is over 8" in diameter, divide the louvres into smaller rolls, tie the roll to hold it firmly together without distorting he fabric.
Machine Washing - Place one roll into the bottom of a pillowcase and knot the pillowcase to secure the roll. Only one roll should be washed at a time. Wash under the setting for woollens at 40 degrees C. with a mild detergent and cancel the final spin.
Drying - Stand the tied roll on its end for an hour to allow excess water to drain away. Then undo the roll and hang he louvres to drip dry. Replace the weights whilst the blind is drying.
DO NOT TUMBLE DRY OR IRON
Manual Cleaning by Hand - Remove the louvres as described above and lay separately on a flat surface. Using a mild detergent clean each louvre by wiping from top to bottom with a slightly damp cloth. Do not press too hard and don’t rub the louvre. Dry as described above and re-hang the louvre on the track.

DO NOT RE-HANG THE LOUVRES IN THE WINDOW IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT OR
EXCESSIVE HEAT UNTIL THEY ARE DRY

PLEASE NOTE. After machine or hand washing small strands of fibre may appear at the edges of the blinds – this is normal. Simply remove them with a sharp pair of scissors
